Eastern Ramon “Camp-Us”

Much to my dismay, the Middle East once again erupted in war, just two days after I returned from an Israel Trail hike at the end of February 2026. Sirens and other interruptions made it impossible for me to focus. It took me a week to edit my photos and another week to write this blog post. The physical challenge of this 2-day hike from the Negev to the Arava was offset by the joy in experiencing the "super bloom" of wildflowers caused by abundant rains this winter.

Makhtesh Ramon is one of the most amazing places for hiking the Israel Trail. The dramatic landscape constantly changes, as the trail passes through colorful rock layers, dark volcanic formations, towering cliffs, wide gravel valleys, and narrow canyons. The area also preserves the remains of ancient Nabatean trade routes. A number of highlights marked my two-day hike on the trail.
